 Google (NSDQ: GOOG) co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and Google CEO Eric Schmidt must have new plans to attack the competition, or they just like to fly really, really fast. Whatever the reason, they recently bought a fighter jet.

 

Today, The New York Times is reporting that a company controlled by the top three Googlers recently bought a Dornier Alpha Fighter Jet.  The company, H211 LLC, is controlled by Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt, and it is responsible for managing a fleet of private aircraft for the three men. The company already manages a Boeing 757, a Boeing 767, and two Gulfstream V's.These four aircraft, plus the new fighter jet, all have landing rights at Moffett Field, which is a located near Google's main offices. According to a Google spokesperson, the Alpha Jet is being outfitted with scientific instruments for NASA missions, including instruments that the other planes could not carry. The Times says that Google CEO Eric Schmidt is "an avid pilot." The Dornier Alpha Fighter Jet is made by Dornier in Germany and Dassault-Breguet of France.

Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have added to their air fleet.

 They are now the proud owners of a fighter jet.

They purchased a Dornier Alpha Jet like the one pictured.  They are storing it in a hangar at Moffett Field in Mountain View.

Our news helicopter flew over the hangar and found a closed door, but the control tower confirmed the jet was inside.

The New York Times says the plane is outfitted with scientific instruments to help out with NASA missions.

The Google founders also own several other jets including a Boeing 757.  

All of the planes have landing rights at Moffett, which is within a few miles of the Google campus.

Brin and Page are not the only Silicon Valley moguls to buy a military plane.

Oracle's Larry Ellison owns several aircraft, including fighter jets.

구글이 ‘전투기’를 구입한 까닭은?  
 

세계최대의 검색 포털 구글이 전투기를 구입했다고 알려지면서 화제에 올랐다.

뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 지난 24일(현지시간) “구글의 항공기를 관리하는 업체 H211 LLC사가 독일 ‘도르니에르’(Dornier)에서 제작한 전투기 ‘Alpha-Jet’을 구입했다.”고 인터넷판에 보도했다.

NYT에 따르면 미항공우주국(NASA)의 모페트 필드에 보관되어 있는 이 전투기는 기관포와 폭탄 등이 장착 가능하다.

이같은 보도 이후 구글의 전투기 구입에 대한 설왕설래가 각 언론들 사이에서 이어졌다.

특히 구글 임원들이 개인 전투기로 사용할 가능성을 무시할 수 없다는 ‘음모론’까지 제기되고 있는 상황.

그러나 모페트 필드를 운영하는 나사 에임스 연구소의 스티브 조르네처 디렉터는 “나사와 구글의 계약관계에 따른 훈련용 비행기”라며 “파일럿 교육훈련을 위한 것”이라고 밝혔다.

그의 설명에 따르면 나사가 구글측에 모페트 필드를 민항기용으로 사용할 수 있는 권리를 주는 대신 비행기를 이용할 수 있는 상호 보완적인 계약을 맺었다. 그러나 민항기는 훈련용도로 적합하지 않아 별도의 전투기를 구입하게 된 것.

현재 나사는 모페트 필드 이용료로 연간 130만달러(약 18억 7000만원)를 구글로부터 받고 있다.

한편 구입한 전투기 ‘Alpha-Jet’의 최고속력은 시속 994km이며 1분에 5000ft(약 1.5km)를 상승할 수 있다. 라고 보도를 하였습니다.
